Salmon Fever

Many apologies for the radio silence in the last week. I have a few posts in the works but the workbench has taken priority over the keyboard of late. The reason is that I’ve got a number of orders I’m trying to get done before I head off to Canada for a few weeks of salmon fishing. There just aren’t enough hours in the day it seems.

Speaking of salmon, I have to confess that I’ve officially entered into what Junior calls “Salmon Fever”, an ailment I catch every year when the days start to cool off here in New England and I start thinking about my upcoming trip. The first reports start coming in about the seasonal run and I start mulling over what flies need tying and all of the gear I’ll need, and pretty soon it’s just about all I can think about.

It’s a good trip — almost a month long — a luxury that I’ve allowed myself all of these years and which is really more than any fisherman could ask for. Taking a month away from work is something that I probably should feel guilty about but don’t, largely because I’ve justified it to myself over the years with the simple reason that it’s one of the things that I love most in the world and so it just seems a shame not to do it as much as I can. It’s not a particularly complicated bit of logic but it does have a certain straightforward elegance, or at least I like to think so.

At any rate, I don’t have the time to write much more than this right now, but don’t be surprised if most of my posts over the next month are all about salmon. The only cure, I’ve found, is to let it run it’s course, to hope for a good run of fish and to fish them hard. Here are a few photos from seasons past, just to give you a sense.
