Video: Making Payne-style Acorn Caps

by Marc on December 17, 2011

So, I hinted a few weeks back that Junior and I had something fun in the works, and here it finally is! It all started because I needed to make some reel seat acorn caps for a rod and so Junior thought it would be fun to bring his camera into the shop and try shooting some video of the process, step-by-step. Neither of us really have any experience with video, but we thought we’d just give it a shot and the result is what you see below. Let us know what you think!

Here is a nice still shot from the opening of the video:

Great video Marc. Thanks for showing your fans how its done. Please continue to produce other informative videos. As a result of watching this video, I have a greater appreciation for the skills you possess and the man hours you devote to your craft. Maybe others who watch this video will stop calling and asking “Where’s my rod,” Happy Holidays.

Great job Marc, gives a new appreciation to all those rod fittings that I’ve looked at over the years. By the way, you look very neat in your apron, is this something you wear often???
Now I know why we moved that lathe from upstate N.Y.
All the very best over the coming holidays to you and your family.

Thanks Steve, George, Bruce, and Dave, for the kind words and nice feedback. It was a bit more work to do than I thought (the video that is, not the acorn caps) but still quite a bit of fun. Junior and I are planning to do a few more of these when we get some time.

Speaking of which, we’re always up for ideas on topics that you might find interesting. Any good suggestions?

Mr. Aroner,
Thank You for putting this film together. I am much more informed about the practice of making the hardware than before. Your machinery is stunning as well. Great job!
Best, Mark

Great video. Still can’t afford a rod but have wanted one ever since my dad and I met you at a small show in the late 80′s/90′s. You had the most beautiful rods then and I can only imagine they have gotten better. I am still saving my pennies, those rods are worth every one of them..thank you! and best regards!

Thanks Bob, for the kind words and I’m glad you liked the video. That show must have been a long time ago, though I’m still happy to be learning something new about rodbuilding every day!

Thanks Mark and Gary for stopping by too – glad you both like the video as well!
