They go quickly so don't delay!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery five years or so I decide to make a new set of dubbing needles and this one was a particularly fun edition for me to produce. The top portion is made from genuine Leonard Rod Company 51-7 Hunt butt section. The needle is turned slightly over the needle eye size and then glued into the bamboo which has been scalloped at the top near the opening.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lower part deserves explanation. A number of years ago a customer who was an avid collector of Purdey shotguns ordered five rods from me. He also sent me a large block of walnut with which to make his reel seats. The walnut was exceptional and came from a Purdey shotgun blank the he had hand selected himself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI used some of this extra wood to make the middle section of the needles. When considering a name for this series it seemed that having a bamboo fly rod married to a shotgun stock made it obvious: why not call it \"cast and blast\"? The name is written on the bamboo section along with the series number.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLastly, I have added a heavy brass base (with the Spinoza Rod Company cartouche imprinted) so the needle will sit upright on your tying table. While visiting a friend's house in the late 1990's I was given a copy of \"The Wedding Gift\" for bedtime reading. This amusing and short book related the misadventures of a dry fly obsessed fisherman who lost his \"Spinoza\" rod overboard on the first day of his honeymoon at a remote Maine lodge. The protagonist explains that a 3oz. Spinoza is his favorite rod but that he is also a fan of \"Meacham\" rods as well. To the discerning reader, this certainly sounds as though he is referring to Leonard and Payne rods. There was only one problem: which was which? In Taintor Foote's second book of the series -- entitled \"Fatal Gesture\" -- the narrator reveals that old man Spinoza is dead but that his son has taken over the business and that \"they still put out the best rod on the market\". So we come to learn that \"Spinoza\" was clearly a code word for Payne.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the time that I encountered these lovely books I had recently finished a short run of limited edition rods that I considered a tribute to my Leonard roots and was looking to do something different for my next project. In a stroke of luck I had just acquired tooling which would allow me to make the Payne style acorns which I had long admired. It was a natural fit. I decided to make a Payne tribute to match that which had been related in the story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbout the rod itself:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis limited edition rod is 8' 3-piece, 2-tip, with a medium action. The ferrules are an oxidized pot belly step design. Medium cigar grip with small 1\/4 inch corks. Dished Payne-style front check. All cork real seat with nickel-silver divider between the seat and grip. Seat hardware is a slide ring with an aluminum acorn and polished nickel-silver pocket cap. Node spacing and temper color are intended to replicate that of Payne. Wraps are brown with yellow edges treated with original orange shellac color preserver. Rod shafts are coated with spar varnish. I have taken some poetic license with the design in two ways: first, the rod comes with Payne style ferrule plugs which are of course not period to the book, and second, the rod taper is a medium derivative of my dry fly action. Olive colored poplin rod bag.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rod tube is the heaviest brass-lined leather Arnie Mason tube. Stamped with \"Spinoza Rod Co. Ser #12\". The end cap has a brass plaque hand engraved with a light scroll work treatment and \"Spinoza Rod Co serial #12.\" The tube is in mint condition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe book is the twelfth edition to match the serial number (to find the edition number simply turn to the last printed page and one can find it listed there). Rod bag and aluminum tube with brass bottom and top. Tube sports the red Leonard Midland Park, NJ ID sticker. Seat is stamped \"Aroner, Maker\". Also of note is that the aluminum acorn cap on the bottom of the seat pulls out to reveal a nickel silver ferrule with which the fighting butt can be attached. The fighting butt itself is 4 1\/2\" in length when inserted into the bottom of the rod. It is also made of a single piece of aluminum bar stock and cork with a nickel silver male ferrule. The bottom of the fighting butt is done with a Payne-style aluminum acorn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome years ago, I hand delivered the first prototype of this salmon model to a customer. He mounted his Bogdan reel on it, peeled off a bunch of line, and made two false casts before shooting the entire thing all the way to the backing. Simply put, this rod will meet the most demanding fishing conditions and will deliver.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLastly the large polished aluminum tube has tops mounted on both ends - one for theÌâ standard rod and bag, and the other for the fighting butt. All hardware for the rod and tube were handmade in my shop. Inside are two splendid chromo-lithographs by James Poole, as well as 22 sunken mounts containing specimens of feathers and finished flies: quite charming indeed.
