A nice HL Leonard 51-5 Hunt special fly rod, 8'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, built for a #5 line. Serial #8292 indicating an approximate 1982 manufacture date. 4.8 ounces. Very nice medium dry fly action. Used but in very good condition, full length, straight, with nice tight ferrules. This is the "special" model with plum colored wraps, full intermediates, and an agate stripper. There are no signs of hook digs and the inside of the snake guides show very little brassing. The grip is 6 1/2" long in a slim cigar shape and has moderate hand soiling. The only issue with this delightful rod is the obvious belt sanding of the three up nodes, resulting in some graininess there. The ferrules, checks, and reel seat hardware are all oxidized. The cap and ring slide band is stamped "HL Leonard Rod Co, The Rod Maker, Since 1869". The seat wood is mortised curly maple. As noted, the serial #8292 puts the date of manufacture approximately at 1982, and is a rod built just after Tom Maxwell left. The rod packs into a tan cloth bag and a brushed aluminum tube with the late model brass hardware.
