A nice H.L. Leonard 49DF-5 model bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5 line. The rod weighs 3.7 ounces. Medium action. Vintage pre-fire Leonard in used condition. The wraps and rod-shaft varnish show signs of crazing/cracking/bag imprint. Not bad enough to refinish yet, but some other areas will need attention before use. One tip has a sliver off the corner between the tip top and the first guide (a clear wrap would be a good idea) and the rod could use a general straighten and ferrule cleaning. However, the rod is full length and fully original. Wheatstraw color cane with three-up node pattern. The main wraps are light tan with green edges at the keeper and male ferrules. Perfection style chromed stripper and reverse twist bronze snakes. The step ferrules are polished and post-date the patent stamp. The keeper is one flat right. The grip is 5" long and shaped to a medium cigar. The reel seat is a slide band and cap over a varnished and flatted butternut spacer. The nickel silver butt cap is stamped “The Leonard Rod, H.L. Leonard Rod Co. Makers” in a cartouche, and below, “Reg. U.S. Pat Off”, and “Tournament” on the reverse. The rod comes in the original bag with hang tag and tube.
