An H.L. Leonard Model 50 Tournament bamboo fly rod, 8', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #6/7 line. Pre-fire model and a somewhat unusual model 50. It weighs 3.9 ounces on my scale. Listed as a “Heavy six” on the hang tag. Medium to slowish action. I might like a 5 on this rod. Fully original condition and showing signs of moderate use with a tiny bit of ferrule cracking, brassing to the inner guides, and soiled grip being the only signs of use. Blonde wheatstraw color cane, with three up nodes. Light tan main wraps with pale green edges. No patent date in the ferrules. The ferrules and seat hardware are all polished. The cork grip is 5 1/2” long and turned to a medium to bluntish cigar profile. The seat is a down locking slide band of butternut with some dark markings from a reel foot. The ring is longer than late period Leonards (less edge crunch). The butt cap is stamped: “The Leonard Rod / H.L. Leonard Rod Co., Makers” in cartouche and “reg U.S. Pat Off”. “Tournament” is stamped on the reverse. The cap has the usual incised target on the bottom. Original bag and tube.
