The nickel silver all metal seat is a slide band and soldered hood constructed of rolled and soldered sheet stock. The seat is engraved with a prior owner's name \"C.H. Hayes\" and has the rarely seen die stamp \"HL Leonard Makers, W. Mills + Son, New York, Sole Agents\" in an oval cartouche. As always, this handmade hardware is a treat to examine. The rod packs into a form case without the tie strings. One tip has a partial facet crack between the ferrule and the lowest guide. The second tip appears to have been splintered in the same area and has been re-glued. The grip is a Western style so often favored by Jim Payne and is 7\" long. It has some soiling but no ridging. Uplocking screwlock seat of aluminum which is stamped \"Payne\" in a cartouche and \"Reg Us Pat Off\" beneath it. The spacer looks like spanish cedar. The ferrules are tight but could use a mild cleaning. The tips have a sweep and could use some straightening. The size is roughly equivalent to a Vom Hofe Perfection size 1 though the spool is less dished than the Vom Hofe reels, resulting in a bit more line capacity (it should hold DT4+90 \/ DT5+50 \/ DT6+20 or a WF4+120 \/ WF5+80 \/ WF6+50). It weighs 6.4 oz. The reel features a seven-position drag setting mechanism on the tail plate, a sliding click switch, two roller pillars, and a sliding oil cap marked \"Heritage No.12 E. Vom Hofe\". The slide band and cap is fitted over a mortised and varnished piece of spectactular burl walnut. The reel seat is an uplocking black anodized aluminum screwlock made entirely in my shop, and I have taken every effort to make these screwlocks jam-proof. The thread is 16 TPI acme style to channel any grit. The nut is finished tapped with an .005 oversize tap and the interior threads are polished to eliminate any barred edges. The nut is pared off from the slide to avoid binding and a taper to match the hardy foot is inlet so the slide will pull up rather than pitch off when tightened. The slide is stamped \"Aroner, Maker\" in cartouche. The mortised varnished wood spacer is a stunning piece of pure highly figured Koa. An aluminum black anodized end cap is decorated with an incised slant knurl and a Leonard-style target. The rod is pin straight. I keep one of these tapers among my personal rods and consider it one of the best for fishing the Delaware river when turning over a long leader is important, and this model has also been used to fish for landlocked salmon in Maine as well. As head of reel making for Vom Hofe, Zwarg worked with the world class fisherman who followed him when he was granted the right to make the Vom Hofe style reels under his own name. Despite what should be a popular and highly versatile size, I've come across relatively few of these 400's in 3\/0 size. Given the nice size of this model and the power of the Zwarg drag (which was beefier than Vom Hofes) this is a reel that makes the jump very nicely to modern fishing and should fish very well for someone looking to put a classic on their mid-sized spey setup. You certainly won't find many in this kind of superb original condition. Medium action. All original condition and probably made in the 1930's. For its age it is in very good condition with a few minor issues. First of these are a few varnish chips and the second is the cracked agate tip-tops in both tips (the agate stripping guide is fine). The ferrule fits are fine and the rod is straight. Original \"top hat\" style ferrule plugs. 3-up node pattern construction and blonde cane. The wraps are red edged with green. The ferrules are the lovely pot belly style with a clear patent date on the butt female. The grip is an unusual 5\" cigar (relatively short for an 8' rod) of 3\/8\" corks and it is fairly heavily soiled though there are signs that it had been cleaned at some point. Varnished butternut spacer with a square thread uplocking screw lock seat. The stamp says \"The Leonard, HL Leonard Rod Co, Makers, Reg US Pat Off\" and opposite \"Special Tournament\".
