A Payne model 210 fly rod, 9'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, built for a #7 line. 5.9 oz. This is an unusual Payne rod. Fair condition. The rod is straight the ferrules are tight, but there are a number of varnish chips, some cork erosion, and some varnish loss on the Walnut slide band seat. The owner's name is inscribed on the butt. Looks to be an early 1950's rod. Now for the unusual. The rod is wrapped in yellow main with black edges fore and aft. A professional job I must add. All the guides all the way up to the tip tops are what I call "circle guides". The feet of the guide almost touch each other and the hoop is almost perfectly circular (we used these at Leonard for stripping guides on the "Catskill" models). Reportedly the owner sent this rod back to the Payne shop every year to have it tuned up. Is it original? Just tonight I was speaking with a buddy on the west coast and I mentioned the unusual color wraps and he told me he had one with the same color wraps and the same circle guides. I think that points to the rod as being likely original to the Payne shop despite its unusual characteristics. The ferrule oxidation is 90% original. The grip is a half wells 6 1/4" long and has some damage from being used as a hook keeper. There is no hook keeper and no sign there ever was one. The reel seat is a Walnut slide band. The cap and ring retain little of the original oxidation. The cap is stamped "Payne" in a cartouche and "Reg. U.S. Pat Off". The olive rod bag is original as is the tube. The hangtag states "9 1/2'  5 3/4o z, No 210". The brass cap has a grey felt insert and a small corner of the original Payne label still adheres to the tube.
