hl-leonard-catskill-9-3-2-3947
HL Leonard Catskill Fly Rod 9' 3/2 #5

An H.L. Leonard bamboo fly rod, 9', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5 line. 5.2 ounces. Medium edging to slow action. 1 tip short. A venerable old Leonard that dates back at least to the WWI era. The rod is in used but very good condition for being at least a hundred years old. One tip has been set down from the top 4 1/4" inches. The other tip is full length and straight. The ferrule fits are tight. The varnish is in fair condition with some chips here and there. There is a faint "110" inked at the ferrule on the mid section which indicates the rod was overcoated many years in the past. The grip is heavily darkened from use. The varnish shows roughness not from bag impressions but from the overcoat. The rod has a 3-up node pattern and the main wraps are red with a black edge at the keeper and male ferrules. While the butt does not have the "Catskill" signature wraps, it does have a small reverse-twist snake guide for a stripper. The other snakes are very small — sized for silk lines. The butt female ferrule has the patent date stamp.
The grip is fully original and intact but somewhat short at 5" and is turned to a cigar shape. The seat is all-metal nickel silver with a slide band and fixed-pocket cap. The die stamp is "The H.L. Leonard Rod, Leonard and Mills Co., Makers." The rod comes in an unusual green velvet form case (the tie strings are gone) with a leather cap and a leather-bottom canvas overbag.
