An F.E. Thomas Mahogany bamboo fly rod, 9', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for what feels to me like a #4 or #5 line. Serial #30. Very fine tips with a wet fly action. Dark oven temper cane with darker nodes. Brown wraps with an agate stripper. Reverse twist snake guides. Ferrules and seat hardware are anodized jet black. The varnish is good with a few chips here and there. There is a bit of excess varnish flowing off the wraps (was it given a possible overcoat?). 3, 3, 3, 3 + 1 signature wraps. The keeper ring is pinned to the front cork check one flat right. The 5 1/2" slim cigar grip is well tanned with hand soiling. The all-cork seat features an oxidized ring and pocket cap. The pocket cap is stamped "30" and "F.E. Thomas – Special – Bangor, ME." The ring retains 95% of the oxidation and the cap 85%, mostly due to edge wear. The ferrule fits are excellent and the rod is straight. The rod comes in its original green poplin bag and aluminum tube with the rarely seen and intact Thomas tube label. The hang tag has separated from the bag but is included in the tube. These mahogany models are rare indeed!
