Edward Vom Hofe may be the most celebrated name in reelmaking. First established in 1867 in New York, Edward Vom Hofe was responsible for a host of early innovations, including a spring-loaded drag system, a click and pawl mechanism, and an automatic reel design. Though Edward produced a variety of different reel styles, the most valuable are his fly reels, especially those at either end of the size spectrum. After many decades of producing extraordinarily high-quality reels, the company eventually moved from New York to Philadelphia in 1940 and was ultimately sold to reelmaker Otto Zwarg.
