Edward Vom Hofe Fly Reels
Vom Hofe may be the most celebrated name in fly reels and reelmaking. First established in 1867 in New York, the company established there by Edward Vom Hofe was responsible for a host of early innovations, including a spring-loaded drag system, a click and pawl mechanism, and an automatic reel design. Though the Vom Hofe reelmakers produced a variety of different reel styles, the most valuable are their fly reels, especially those at either end of the size spectrum. Edward Vom Hofe is the most collectible name though reels made by his brother Julius Vom Hofe are also sought after. The company moved from New York to Philadelphia in 1940 and was ultimately sold to reelmaker Otto Zwarg. If you have a Vom Hofe fly reel, you are fortunate indeed!
