Edwards Bamboo Fly Rods

The Edwards name is a giant in bamboo fly rods, and its patriarch, EW Edwards, had roots that went back to the cradle of the craft, working alongside fellow luminaries Hiram Leonard, Ed Payne, Fred Thomas, and the Hawes brothers. What Edwards may be most known for, however, is his discovery of the process of heat treating bamboo which would give Edwards rods their strength and hallmark color, a process that would be adopted by many others. It was also responsible for ushering in the era of the "modern" dry fly rod as the sport transitioned away from longer, heavier wet-fly style rods. While Edwards rods would be manufactured under other names - first Winchester and then later Horton - it is the rods that EW Edwards would build himself and in conjunction with his two sons Bill and and Gene, that collectors value most.
