Lyle Dickerson Model 801510 D Bamboo Rod (Owned by Art Flick) 8' 3/2 #5

VFT193

For sale here is a very special Lyle Dickerson Model 801510 D bamboo rod - 8' 3/2 for a 5 weight line. Made in 1949 for famed fly-tyer, writer, and all around fly fishing legend, Art Flick. Art was a close friend to Dickerson as noted in Gerald Stein and James Schaaf's book, "Dickerson The Man and His Rods". In fact, Mr. Flick sold many rods for Dickerson. Dickerson preferred word of mouth to sell his rods rather than traditional advertisements. The rod is being sold by his son and will include a letter of provenance. It has been in the possession of his son since Mr. Flick's death and has not been fished.

Art certainly fished the rod extensively as is evident in the photos. There are also a few repairs throughout. The butt section is down 1 3/4", the ferrule and stripping guide have been re-wrapped. The first tip has a 1 1/4" long repair wrap at the tip-top as well as being down 1/2". Lastly, the second tip is short 1 1/4" and has a 1 1/8" repair wrap between the first and second guide up from the ferrule. Both tip-tops have been replaced. All other wraps and hardware are original and in excellent condition. Due to the historical nature of the rod, we have left the sets in the sections as they are.

The rod features beautiful pumpkin-toned cane with transparent caramel-colored silks and black tipping. Agate stripping guide. The script remains clean and bold over a swelled butt. Along with the rod model, "Art Flick 1959" is also written. The varnish shows light scuffs and scratches throughout though it is without meltdown or bag burn. Loop hookkeeper. Nickel silver hexagonal winding check. The cigar-style grip measures 5 7/8" in length. The cork is soiled but void of any ridging, hook gouges, or holes. Aluminum down-locking reel seat over a walnut spacer with nickel silver butt cap. The ferrules have a perfect fit, nice and snug. The rod weighs in at 4.05 oz. Replacement tube with the original bag.

In spite of the issues with the rod, it remains a fantastic historical piece. Rarely do we see a rod that ties together two figures as significant as Lyle Dickerson and Art Flick. True ambassadors to the sport and passion of fly fishing.
