A rare Gary Howells bamboo fly rod, 7', 2-piece, 2-tip and built for what feels to me like a #4. Serial #3789, built in the first year of Gary's independent rod building after leaving Winston. Excellent overall condition with just a few minor traces of cosmetic wear. There is a tiny amount of hand soiling to the grip, and some reel foot indentations in the reel seat. There are also a few very small blemishes in the varnish around the writing on the grip, just above the agate stripping guide, and two small ones on one tip, though all are very minor and some have been touched up slightly (I'm told that Glenn Brackett did the touch up). Overall the rod is very clean and in excellent lightly used condition. Medium, full flexing action, I could see this being a real pleasure to fish on smaller rivers. The rod is nice and straight and the ferrule fits are good. The rod weighs 2.5 ounces on my scale. Medium wheatstraw cane done in a three up node pattern. The rod is wrapped in the typical color preserved brown with yellow tipping. The rod has a keeper and carbide stripper, with bronzed guides and chrome tip tops. The ferrules sport the typical overwrap. The grip and all-cork seat are integrated together in a gentle taper that starts at the butt cap and ends with a slight flare at the top of the grip. The hardware is a simple bright cap and ring with a composite bottom forming the bottom of the cap. The rod packs into an orange rod bag and aluminum tube with aluminum fittings. These shorter Howells are few and far between, especially in this kind of excellent original condition. A great rod for the Howells fan!
