A nice HL Leonard model 38-H bamboo fly rod, 7', 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 line. Serial #8424 which puts it in the Larry Foster period. 3.8 ounces. One tip is a later replacement with the wrap color a few shades darker than the original. This tip has been dip finished and wrapped over the finish rather than the other way around. The finish of the rod is more consistent with the early 1970’s brown-wrapped Leonards. The cane color in wheatstraw with a three up node pattern. Wrapped brown at the keeper and ferrules, lemony brown at the guide wrap. The stripping guide is ceramic in a shock ring. The snakes and tip-tops are chrome. The tip-top on one tip is slightly bent off and needs careful work with some pliers. The Leonard ferrules are polished bright. The cork grip is 5 1/2" long and shaped to a Western-style with a hidden pocket cap. The uplock screw lock is stamped “The Leonard® Rod, H.L. Leonard Rod Co., Makers” in a cartouche and the spacer is butternut. Despite the replacement tip this rod has a veyr nice action, a bit quicker than your average 38-H. It comes in a tan cloth bag with brushed aluminum tube with brass fittings. No Leonard date, stick, or hang tag.
