An H.L. Leonard "Standard" 50-5 bamboo fly rod, 8', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5 line Serial. #81139. 4.3 ounces. 1981 manufacture date. Near mint condition and I suspect the rod has been lawn cast only. A faint casting crack at one of the ferrule wraps is the only evidence of use I could find. Fast dry fly action. I also suspect this rod may date to the end of the Maxwell period at Leonard, as the reel seat has the caramelized varnish that I did. Blond, oven-tempered cane, with tangerine main wraps with a red edge at the keeper and male ferrules. 3-up node pattern. Carbide stripper and black snakes. Superb varnish. Brown wraps at the polished step ferrules. All rod sections are factory straight. The grip is 6" long, tapering down to a very slim cigar at the check. The tiger maple reel seat is mortised and as stated received some extra oven tempering that caramelized the varnish. The nickel silver sliding ring is a bit tight but slides enough to lock up a Hardy reel foot. The butt cap has the "H.L. Leonard Rod Co, The Rod Makers, Since 1869" stamp. The rod comes with a light brown cloth bag and a brushed aluminum tube with the late-model brass hardware.
