An HL Leonard two handed bamboo fly rod, 15', 3-piece, with 2-mids and 3-tips. The rod weighs 26.1 ounces on my scale. Refinished some time in the late 1950's or 1960's at Leonard. One mid-section is 2" short. And one tip has the tip top rotated two flats off the wrap flat (this is fixable). The rod is typical of rods dating to the 1890's where use on remote salmon rivers necessitated spare parts, hence the three tips and two mids. This rod was owned by Jay Cooke, a prominent Philadelphia banker and investor in early transcontinental railroads who was also credited with financing the Union army during the US Civil war. The die stamp reads "The HL Leonard Rod / Leonard Mills and Co, Makers". The rod has been re-wrapped in 326 red with signature wraps and hi arch snake guides. The ferrules are made from drawn tube rather than the earlier rolled and soldered spike ferrules. There is almost no wear to the inner part of the snake guides though a small amount of crazing at the ferrule from casting. The rod has a large nickel silver front cork check and the foregrip is 9 1/2" long and shaped in a flat cigar profile. It is in very good condition. The full nickel silver reel seat is a downlock wiht rails. The bottom grip is 6" long with a 1" long nickel silver cap with a large black "E. Vom Hofe and Co" rubber button. There is a canvas overbag with a tip tube to hold two of the tips. And this rod also comes with a large leather carrying case (not pictured). A nice refinished version of a grand old salmon rod with some fun history.
