A EF Payne bamboo fly rod, 8', 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 or #5 line. The rod weighs 4.2 ounces on my scale. Medium action. The rod has been refinished with evidence of some light wear post-refinish. A bit of cosmetic cracking at the ferrule wraps from casting. The varnish is excellent and the rod is straight. The use of narrow foot guides (not paddle-foot) and large hoop tip tops is inconsistent with the age of the rod. The grip also appears to have been re-done as the front part of the western grip narrows down a bit more than the original would have. Flamed cane with brown main wraps with yellow edges on all and an extra band of purple at the keeper and male ferrules. The ferrule has an aluminum and cork finial ferrule plug. The stripper is a red agate and the snakes are black stainless. The grip is 6" long and turned to a western with a hidden pocket cap. The aluminum up-lock screwlock is stamped “Payne” in cartouche and "US reg pat off" with the reverse featuring “Sold by Clapp & Treat Co. Inc, Hartford, CT”. The bag and tube are original (with gray felt in the tube cap) though the bag is missing the hang tag.
