A nice EF Payne two handed bamboo fly rod, 12'6", 3-piece, 2-tip and built for what feels to me like a #8 or #9. The rod weighs 18.8 ounces on my scale. This magnificent rod has seen minimal use. There is some darkening of the grip and some cosmetic cracking at the ferrule wraps but almost no brassing anywhere, not to the bronze snakes or the ferrules. Superb ferrule fits and the rod is as straight as the day it left the Payne shop. This rod dates from the 1960’s as evidenced by the “Made for Abercrombie & Fitch” stamp located down near the rubber button. Flamed and oven-tempered cane with impeccable Payne varnish. One of the rare occasions when there is a discernible double-spiral node spacing in the butt and mid. The main wraps are brown with pale green edges and additional edges of yellow and purple at the keeper and male ferrules. Carbide stripper and bronze snake guides. The step ferrules retain 100% of their jet black oxidation and the lower ferrules are crafted from double wall tube. The ferrules have finial ferrule plugs. The front grip is 10" long and shaped to a cigar profile. The down-lock screwlock is a polished bright aluminum and has the modern Payne stamp. The insert is walnut. The lower grip is 5" long with an aluminum socket for the large rubber button. The rod packs into a tan cloth bag and large aluminum tube with brass fixtures that are all original.
