A very nice EF Payne model 202 bamboo fly rod, 8', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5/6. The rod weighs 4.3 ounces. Excellent original condition. The rod has seen very little use. There are some casting cracks to the ferrule wraps and a wee bit of brassing in the guides. The oxidation to the butt cap and ferrules is 100%. This rod has the quick dry fly feel I more often find in the two piece rods with screw lock seats. It’s very challenging to exactly date Paynes but this tube is engraved with a presentation date of May 1958. Medium chestnut color cane. Superb original varnish on the rod shaft. The main wraps are brown with yellow edges on all and fore and aft on the keeper, male ferrules, and tip tops. An additional edge at the keeper and male ferrules looks more like red than purple. Perfection stripping guide and black snakes. Finial ferrule plugs. The grip is a medium cigar that is 5 1/2" long. Unfortunately it has been cleaned, showing some faint ridging. The reel seat is an oxidized cap and ring over a hand-flatted varnished Spanish cedar spacer. The seat has some light bag imprint. The cap is stamped “Payne” and “Reg U.S. Pat Off.” and "sold by Abercrombie & Fitch, New York." The bag is original (but missing the hang tag) and the tube is original as well.
