Payne 96 Fly Rod 6'6" 2/2 #4 - Stan Bogdan's Personal Fly Rod

An excellent E.F. Payne model 96 fly rod, 6'6", 2-piece, 2-tip, built for a #4 line. 2.6 oz. #10 ferrule. A delightful fast action #4 in near-mint condition. This is also the personal rod of famed reel maker Stan Bogdan. Only a tiny bit of brassing to the inner snake guides, a minute bit of edgewear to the cap and ring, and a small reel foot impression and scratch on the Spanish cedar seat keeps this rod out of the mint category. Flamed and oven tempered bamboo in the Payne semi-random node spacing. The usual superb Payne varnish in flawless condition. The wraps are brown with yellow edges with an extra band of purple at the keeper, male ferrules, and tip tops.  The keeper is one flat right. The ferrules fit perfectly and the oxidation on the ferrules and the cap and ring retain 99 1/2% of the original oxidation. The slim cigar grip is 5 1/8" long and composed of 3/8" corks. The reel seat is cap and ring with varnished Spanish cedar. The die stamp on the cap reads "Payne" in a cartouche and "Reg. U.S. Pat. Off." and on the reverse "Made for Abercrombie & Fitch Co."  The rod comes packed in the original Payne bag with hang-tag and the original brass cap tube with Payne data sticker. The brass cap has a grey felt insert. This rod comes with two letters of provenance from Steve and Sandy Bogdan. Not only a beautiful rod in its own right, but a fantastic opportunity here to own a piece of history.
