For sale here is an unmarked Sam Carlson 7' 2/2 4wt hex bamboo rod. The rod is in excellent+ condition with light signs of use. All sections are full length and straight. An overcoat of varnish has been applied at some point in the rod's history. The rod features a moderately dark tempered cane finish with scarlet wraps and black tipping. U-shaped hook-keeper. Bakelite checks with a similar accent at the butt cap. Reverse-half wells grip 6" in length with light soiling. Bright nickel silver cap and ring reel seat over a mortised cork spacer. There is a very small scrape and dent on the rim of the butt cap. The ferrules are size 12/64 with a great fit. The rod weighs 3.05 oz. The action is a smooth medium-fast. Comes in a replacement tube. The bag may be original although I cannot be certain.
The rod has a few of the hallmarks of Sam's shop, namely the reel seat hardware, cap & ring, grip check & winding check.
Dana Gray informed me that this rod could have been assembled not long after the purchase of the F. E. Thomas Co. in 1958. According to Dana, Sam put together a number of these hex rods from blanks that came down with Thomas. The rod has Thomas ferrules as well. The reel seat cap & ring was made from N/S thimble-like cups that also came from Thomas. Dana also considers the possibility that Ray Gambordella could have been involved in making the rod. Ray put a number of rods together that resemble this rod. He sourced components and glued up hex sticks from Sam on occasion.
