A Payne Model 98 bamboo fly rod, 7', 2-piece, 2-tips, and built for a #3 or #4. #60801 is listed on the hangtag. A medium slow action with a #4 or a bit faster with a #3. 2.9 ounces. Used but original condition. There are a few minor issues, some small varnish chips on the rod shafts, one yellow edge on a tip wrap is frayed, and there is some varnish missing on the reel seat. There are also some cosmetic casting cracks on the ferrule wraps, and the rod could use a mild straightening. All in all though no major issues, all eminently addressable. Brown wraps with yellow edges and an extra band of purple at the keeper and male ferrules. #8 perfection stripper. The ferrule fits are good and they retain 99% of their original oxidation. The grip is 5 1/2" long and shaped to a medium cigar profile. It shows a fair bit of hand soiling but fortunately has not been cleaned. The cap and ring seat sports the "Payne / Reg Us Pat Off" stamp and on the reverse "Sold by Abercrombie and Fitch, New York". The butt cap retains 60% of its original oxidation but the ring retains only about 2%. The Spanish cedar spacer could use a little revarnishing. The rod comes with the original olive poplin bag with the hang tag and the aluminum tube with brass fittings and a grey felt insert in the cap. The red Abercrombie and Fitch sticker is about 80% intact.
