Abel Fly Tying Vise

1626

A very nice Abel Supreme fly tying vise, this one from the first run that Steve Abel made in 1999 and signed by him along with "#2" on the underside of the base, presumably to indicate the second of these that Abel made. The vise does not appear to have been used at all from what I can see. The base is machined from solid brass, as are the stem and headstock. The result is a precision and heavy duty package that is reminiscent of the heavier Renzetti designs.

The following is from a later Abel brochure for the catalog version of this vise.

  1. It's true rotary, enabling the tier to instantly dress the fly from every possible angle

  2. It has built-in Centerline Gauge that lets you instantly align and put your hook dead center in the vise's jaws. Use any straight edge (small ruler or business card) to set the hook accurately. Utilizes stainless steel jaws that hold hook sizes #28 to 12/0

  3. The jaws can hold a 3/0 saltwater hook so tightly it can be bent into a circle without the hook dislodging

  4. It has no groove in the jaws to hold a hook. A groove can damage both the plating and the integrity of the hook that can lead to failure

  5. It has functional machined-in holes for drying stages. Move a toothpick from hole to hole as the fly dries

  6. It features a brass base milled with shallow pockets to hold hooks, eyes, materials, and small tools

  7. It comes with an easy-to-use bobbin holder

  8. There are four 1/2-inch rubber feet for stability

  9. You can take the Abel Supreme Vise with you. It comes in a compact, fully padded nylon case for storage or carrying

The vise comes in the original Abel bag with foam interior. The bobbin holder is not included. This is an absolutely beautiful vise with all the modern amenities that, from what I understand, is no longer made as it proved too expensive to produce. A fantastic piece of contemporary fly tying gear for the serious tyer!
