An E.F. Payne bamboo fly rod, refinished by Sam Carlson, 10', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for what feels to me like a #6 or #7 line. 7.3 ounces. A slower action grilse rod with very fine tips for its size (.061" over varnish) and well suited for a silk line. The somewhat lighter flame color cane indicates an early rod by Jim. Brown wraps with an agate stripper. The chrome guides have been outfitted by Sam. The ferrules are the early “potbelly” style. Excellent coat of varnish. The grip is 6 1/2" long and styled to a blunt cigar. The all nickel silver large seat fits a Bogdan just fine. The slide ring was split so Sam made a new one (the old one is included along with the drawing done by Sam). A 7 1/2" fighting butt is included, and fits into the canvas overbag. The tips go into a bamboo tip tube, and everything goes into a very large non-original aluminum tube. A one-of-a-kind rod if you ask me.
