An E.F. Payne bamboo fly rod, 8'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #3 or #4 line. 4.2 ounces.Used but in original condition, very good for a rod 90 to 100 years old. The rod has mild bag rash here and there. Some casting cracks have just started at the ferrule wraps. The biggest problem is a cracked node halfway up one tip, which should be overwrapped before use. This rod has unusually fine tips, about fifty-five to fifty-four thousandths under the varnish. The rod has a very medium/slow action, a benefit for such a light line. Medium chestnut color flamed cane with brown main wraps and black edges on all. Black fore and aft at the keeper, ferrule, and tip tops, with a yellow and purple edge at the keeper and male ferrules. The stripper is an agate and all the snakes are black paddlefoot. The oxidation on the step ferrules is 98% and the fits are excellent. The grip is 5 1/2" long and shaped to a short cigar profile. It has undergone a mild cleaning leaving it slightly ridged. The seat is cap and ring with the cap having the older "E.F. Payne Rod, E.F. Payne Rod Co., Makers" stamp in a cartouche and "Sold by Abercrombie & Fitch, New York." Some loss of oxidation especially to the ring. The Spanish cedar seat has some scratches in the corners. Original bag tube with the hang tag re-sewn to the bag.
