An HL Leonard model 40-5 bamboo fly rod, 8', 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5. Serial #80129 dating to 1980 during the Maxwell period. Fast action. Fair used condition, with two clear wraps, one on the butt 3 1/2" long between the top two guides, and the other on one tip 3" long below the bottom guide (I believe I may have been the one who did this repair in the early 1980s). The rod also has some scratches in the varnish and one partly re-varnished chip on a tip. The agate stripper has been bent backwards 5 degrees. Despite these issues the rod is straight and appears fishable. The rod is flamed medium brown with three up pressed nodes. The main wraps are plum with a band of purple and red at the keeper, male ferrules, and tip tops. The step ferrules are oxidized pewter, and the grip is 6" long and shaped to a slim cigar profile and is well hand-soiled. The reel seat is a cap and ring with a mortised curly maple seat with the caramelized varnish I was responsible for at Leonard. The ring retains 40% of the original oxidation and the cap has some edgewear. The rod packs into a tan cloth bag and a brushed aluminum tube with brass hardware.
