An H.L. Leonard “Hunt Special” 49-5 bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5 line. Serial #8443 which dates to 1984, just post-Maxwell. The rod weighs 4.3 ounces. Fast DF action. Lightly used condition with the start of cosmetic ferrule cracks , a bit of guide brassing and a tiny bit of hardware brassing. The grip has been sanded, leaving it somewhat rough. Just post-Tom Maxwell at Leonard the company went to belt sanding nodes down rather than pressing them out, leaving the nodes a little bit grainier. Flamed cane with the three up node pattern. Agate stripper with olive main wraps and dark intermediates in an ultra-fine band of red, and green at the cap, ferrules and tip tops. The step ferrule fits are good, the ferrules are oxidized and the rod is factory straight. Black snakes and tip tops. The grip is 5 1/2" and shaped to a slim cigar. The slide band seat is mortised, varnished, and made from tiger maple. The oxidized cap is stamped “H.L. Leonard Rod Co., the rod maker, since 1869.” The rod packs into a tan color rod bag and brushed aluminum tube with brass hardware. The collar is stamped “H.L. Leonard Rod Co., The Rod Maker, since 1869.”
