A nice HL Leonard Salmon Series bamboo fly rod, 9', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for what feels to me like a #9 line. "Leonard Salmon Series 72-9" is inked on the shaft, as well as "83-5" on the opposing flat. Based on the serial number the rod was built in 1983 just post-Maxwell. The rod weighs 6.5 ounces on my scale. Powerful full flexing action. Near mint condition with some very minor tanning to the grip and few other real signs of use. The ferrule fits are tight and the rod is straight. The light wheatstraw cane is one in a three up node pattern, and the varnish is in excellent condition. Wrapped in apricot with red tipping at the keeper and tip tops. The serial number "83-5" is inked just above the male on both tips. The ferrules are polished bright. Hoop keeper with a chrome white agate stripper. Dark snake guides. The grip is 7" long with a modified western profile, and has a fixed fighting butt extension that measures 2 1/2". Polished front cork check and a knurled rear one. Uplocking aluminum screwlock seat over a varnished curly maple spacer and a hidden pocket cap under the heel of the grip. The seat hardware boasts the Leonard stamp in a cartouche. The bottom cap of the rod is aluminum with two targets lightly machined into it. The rod packs into a tan cloth bag and aluminum tube with brass fittings. A nice powerful salmon rod that's ready for action.
