A superb Hoagy Carmichael Model 221 salmon rod, 8'9", 2-piece, 2-tip, built for a #8 line. Serial #G-89-2. Hoagy built this rod in 1983 and it is one of just two of these models that he built over the course of his career - a rare sight indeed! This rod is in very good lightly used condition. It has a slight amount of hand soiling on the grip and a tiny bit of brassing on the inner snake guides. Medium-full flexing action. Light oven temper wheat straw color and double spiral node spacing. The varnish is excellent, a light coat yet smooth as glass and not a blemish to be found. The guide wraps are light brown with dark brown at the keeper, ferrules, and tip tops. The keeper wrap has a wide band of tan repeated at the ferrules and tip tops and there is also a thin band of black in the same places. The stripping guide is chromed and the snakes are bronze. The ferrules are original size 17 super Z with the logo stamp on the female and are polished. The grip is 6 3/4" long and shaped to a blunt cigar at the front with a drop and flare at the back. Shall we call it a "heavy western" style? The reel seat is Hoagy's unique down lock screw-lock with a double slant knurl on the nut. The varnished reel seat spacer wood is Radal, a wood native to Chile. There is a hidden pocket cap at the bottom of the seat incorporated into a 3" long fixed fighting butt. The fighting butt has a thin aluminum protective plate fixed on the bottom. The rod comes packed in a tan cloth bag with a wood and cork ferrule plug attached to the bag. The aluminum rod tube has an aluminum bottom cap and a brass collar with an aluminum top with a grey felt insert.
