A nice HL Leonard 49-4 Hunt fly rod, 7'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, built for a #4 line. Serial #8336. Medium fast action. Used but very good condition. The rod is straight and the ferrule fits are smooth and tight. The varnish is in great condition, no defects. The cane is flamed and a three up node pattern. The silk wraps are a light purple color (turns red over the dark blank) with a band of dark purple and red at the keeper and male ferrules. The agate stripper is oxidized and the snake guides and tip tops are black. There are three windaways at the keeper and male ferrules. The serial # is on the wrap flat and "Hunt 49-4" is lettered on the reverse. The grip is 11 corks, 5 1/2" long with a slim cigar shape and shows a fair amount of hand soiling. The reel seat is varnished curly maple. There is some edge and rub rear to the oxidation of the nickel silver cap and ring. The cap is stamped "H.L. Leonard Rod Co, The rod maker, since 1869" in the cartouche. The manufacture date would appear to be 1983, during the Larry Foster period. Original tan cloth bag, brushed aluminum tube with a brass bottom, top, and collar. The collar has a large "H.L. Leonard Rod Co, The Rod Maker, since 1869" roller die stamp in the cartouche. To me, this rod is pretty much the classic Catskill dry fly rod.
