A beautiful little H.L. Leonard, Pat. 1877 bi-metal fly reel. Here is what many consider to be the classic American fly reel as made by Francis Philbrook and Edward Payne. 2 1/2" diameter with a 1" spool width. This one, with the name and patent date, is considered by most to be the first of these raised pillar reels, although several reels have surfaced that have the Leonard name in a cartouche, possibly stamped as such before the patent date was assigned. This example does not have any missing or replaced parts, and the click is strong and favors RHW. A superb example of this early Leonard model!
