Leonard Bimetal Trout Fly Reel - First Model

VFT2122

For sale here is a very scarce first model H.L. Leonard Bimetal fly reel made by Philbrook & Paine in the last quarter of the 19th century. Clearly marked "H.L. Leonard - Pat. June 12, 1877" -- with the patent date being stamped upside down (go find another!)

Constructed with a bronze frame, german silver sideplates, foot, handle arm, and spool. The pillar to pillar diameter is ~2.6" (without pillars it is ~2.2"). The spool width is ~ 1". Ebonite handle grasp. Very good condition overall. The click is smooth. The spool turns freely although one can see evidence of both flanges being slightly bent (and re-straightened) in the past. The foot is full length and straight but also shows evidence of having been bent on both ends and subsequently re-straightened.

All in all, a very scarce and possibly unique example of the classic Philbrook & Paine Leonard bimetal reel!
