For sale is a very scarce H.L. Leonard Model 51A-D raised pillar fly reel made by Julius Vom Hofe. Unlike the Leonard-Mills Patent Click Reel series, the Salmon models came with the "Improved Graduating Adjustable Drag", patented in 1928. The patent number is 1,673,382 and this patent number appears on the back plate along with the "Light" and "Heavy" drag positions. 3 1/2" diameter including pillars and 1 1/8" pillar length, or as the catalog states, "between the plates". Weight 6.75 oz. Duralumin frame with hard rubber panels. German silver screws, pillars, oil cap, handle screw, handle counterbalance, and foot. Bronze arbor.
Excellent overall condition with normal wear. The hard rubber sideplates are crack-free. There are no dings to the frame. The foot is straight and unaltered. The reel winds properly and is right-hand retrieve only. The reel assembles and disassembles very easily.
A fine example of another very historic reel offered here at Vintage Fly Tackle.
