For sale here is an H.L. Leonard, pre-fire Model 52 (or 52 H.L.H.) Special Tournament bamboo rod 9'6" 3/2 6-7wt. The rod is in excellent restored condition. After the restoration, it appears a few repairs were made with a different shade of red thread. All sections are full length with sets in the mid and tips.
Straw colored cane with rusty red wraps and purple tipping. As noted above a few of the red wraps are more of a bright Chinese red. Full intermediates in the rust color. Reverse English-style guides. Agate stripping guide and tip-tops. Handsome swelled butt and ring hook keeper. The cigar grip measures 7" in length with light ridging. Bright nickel silver cap and ring reel seat. Along with the usual maker's stamp, "SPECIAL TOURNAMENT" is also stamped into the reel seat. The ferrules are size 13/64 and 19/64 with a nice fit. The patent is stamped on the ferrules. The rod weighs 6.80 oz. The action is a smooth medium-fast with plenty of power from the butt section. This would be a great light steelhead rod and in fact, the Model 52 H.L.H. was described in the Wm. Mills catalogs as a "Special Steelhead and Western Tournament rod", along with its close relatives, the Models 51 and 53 H.L.H. Also, well suited for bass. Includes the original bag and tube with brass fittings.
Don't miss out on this rarely seen pre-fire Leonard rod that was quite innovative for its time. Truly a neat piece of Leonard history.
