A splendid MK Spittler hollow-built quad fly rod, 8' 2-piece, 2-tip, built for a #4 line. Serial #390. Weighs 4.1 oz. Fast D.F. action. Near mint condition. This rod has just a hint of hand soiling on the grip and the start of a ferrule wrap crack at the female ferrule and one tip. Fluted hollow construction. Excellent varnish over flamed cane with a spiral node pattern. The wraps are red with black edges and a 3,2,1 set of signatures in black at the keeper. Red agate stripper and chrome snake guides. The keeper is on the wrap flat as well as the lettering "M.K.Spittler Co, 390". Stylistically this rod owes a lot to the Edwards Co. and Sam Carlson. The oxidized step ferrules are squared to fit over the bamboo. A front cork check that appears to be made of Delrin or perhaps Tennite? The grip is 6" long and styled as a "Western" with a hidden pocket cap under the heel of the grip. The seat itself is flatted cork with an up locking slide band. The seat finishes with a thin band of Delrin and a longer turning of cocobolo wood and another Delrin cap for the bottom. The ferrule plug is an aluminum and cork finial style like those of a Payne rod. Comes with a tan cloth bag with a pocket for the ferrule plug. The bag has an attractively styled logo label sewn on the pocket and the theme is repeated with a sticker fixed to the rod tube. A very pleasing package from a quality maker whose rods are hard to come by!
