Paul Young Martha Marie Bamboo Fly Rod 7'6" 2/2 #5/6 owned by Chauncy Lively [SALE PENDING]

A fascinating Paul Young "Martha Marie" model bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5 or #6 line. Serial #4200. 3.5 oz. "C.K. Lively" inscribed on the butt shaft. Chauncy Lively was a superb, innovative fly tier and fisherman, spending most of his later life fishing in upper Michigan. If you haven't read it there is a terrific chapter on Chauncy in the book "8" by Hoagy Carmichael, which I highly recommend. Used condition. The grip is hand soiled and one tip is 3/4" short, but the rod is straight and the varnish is in excellent condition. The cane is flamed with very dark patches with a 2-opposed node pattern. Light tan wraps with a carbide stripper and black snake guides. The ferrules are oxidized black and are "Super Z" with the logo stamps. Full flexing action but fairly stiff, so we shall call it DF. The grip is slim/medium cigar with a thumbprint opposite the wrap flat. The reel seat is a black anodized downlock screw-lock with a cork insert and a black anodized aluminum pocket cap stamped "Paul H. Young Co., Detroit, Mich." Brown cloth bag and rod tube appear original. The rod tube has Lively's address at Grayling, MI address. A great little piece of angling history here.
