An E.F. Payne bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for what feels like a #4 line. No hang tag but very likely a model 197. 3.2 ounces. Medium-fast action. Very good original condition. It has been used, with some very minor casting cracks at the ferrules wraps. The grip is well patinated with age but has been left unmolested. There are a few hazy areas of varnish but no hook damage or varnish softness. The oxidation to the ferrules and cap and ring are 95% original. All in all, very nice condition. The butt cap has the "Made for Abercrombie & Fitch" stamp, so the rod dates to the late 1950's and early 1960's. Finial-style ferrule plugs. The cane is flamed and oven tempered to a chestnut color. Typical Payne node spacing. The main wraps are brown with yellow edges. The stripper is a Perfection and the snakes are oxidized black. The step ferrules are a deep jet black and retain 99% of the original oxidation. The ferrule fits are excellent and the rod is straight. The keeper is 1 flat right. The slim cigar grip is 5 1/2" long and the Spanish cedar slide-band reel seat is 3 1/2" long. The cap is stamped "Payne" in cartouche and "Reg U.S. Pat Off." The Abercrombie stamp is mentioned earlier. The +12 tip-to-mid and +19 mid-to-butt ferrule stamp indicates this was the faster trim version of this model. The poplin bag is an off-white color and has the ring for the hang tag but no hang tag. The tube is original with a grey felt insert in the brass cap, but any sign of the original sticker is gone. An exceptional rod!

- We ship at cost to the buyer and in the majority of cases do so via UPS with full insurance and signature. There are cheaper options but our experience has been that you get what you pay for and that it's not worth taking risks when shipping what are often one-of-a-kind items. Your shipping estimate will be calculated at checkout and if you have any questions please contact us. Please note the buyers are responsible for any applicable import duties or fees that may levied. Due to the importance of packing items carefully please allow up to two weeks for arrival (depending on how busy we are) though we certainly do our best to get items to you as expeditiously as possible.
