For sale here is a Payne Model 202 - eight feet with three sections and two tips. The rod is in excellent original condition. All sections are full length and straight.
The rod features moderately tempered cane of the highest quality with java brown silks and gold tipping. Burgundy and gold tipping at the winding check, male ferrules, and tip-tops. There are casting cracks in the ferrule wraps as one would expect from an original Payne that's been fished. All wraps remain sound and not in need of attention. Blued hardware throughout. Ring hook keeper. Nickel silver checks. The classic cigar grip measures 5 3/4" in length. Nickel silver cap and ring reel seat over a mortised Spanish cedar spacer. The butt cap reads,
The ferrules are size 10/64 and 15/64 with an excellent fit. Original ferrule plugs included. The rod weighs 4.20 oz. Wonderful medium fast action. Best with a DT5 line in my opinion. Original bag and tube.
Engraved on the rod tube:
This is a fantastic example of an original 1950s Payne 202. As Bob Summers once said, "If you could not enjoy casting this rod, forget cane."
