For sale here is an F.E. Thomas Special bamboo rod -- 9' 3/2 for a five or six weight line. Serial No. 22 made in 1922. The rod is in very good + condition with some issues and remains mostly original. There is some heat damage (cracks/alligatoring, bag burn) to the varnish throughout the rod as well as some minor chips in the varnish. The midsection is down 1 1/8"; the male ferrule was replaced with an incorrect ferrule, and lastly the stripping guide has been re-wrapped. The rod may have also received light varnish touch-ups periodically in its lifetime.
The rod features moderately-tempered amber-toned cane with red wraps and black tipping. Full intermediates in a rust color. Blued reverse twist English-style guides. Agate stripping guide and tip-tops. Slightly swelled butt. Nickel silver winding check with attached bronzed hook keeper. The cigar grip measures in at 5 3/8" with moderate soiling and is in surprisingly good shape considering its age. All nickel silver cap and ring reel seat with only minor cosmetic dents. "F.E. Thomas SPECIAL Bangor, ME." stamp is featured at the bottom of the seat. The rod weighs in at 4.85 oz. Includes a replacement bag and replacement tube with brass fittings.
Despite the issues, this is a terrific F.E. Thomas from the golden age that deserves appreciation.
