For sale here is a classic R.L. Winston bamboo fly rod -- 9' marked 5 1/4 oz. Serial no. 9934 from the very early 1970s. Made in San Francisco by Doug Merrick. Designed for a nine weight line. This is a one-owner rod and remains in excellent original condition. Fully assembled the rod measures 8 feet 10 1/2 inches with the butt section being 1 3/8" shorter than the tip section.

The rod features beige wraps (NCP) and burgundy tipping at the winding check, signature wrap, ferrules, and tip-top. The female ferrule and first guide down have been re-wrapped at some point. Bright guides. Bronzed ring hook keeper. The script remains clean and bold and includes the original owner's name along with the usual rod information. Handsome bakelite winding check. The full wells grip measures 6 1/2" in length with moderate soiling. Down-locking, bright aluminum reel seat with a classic Winston bakelite spacer. The ferrule fit is excellent. There are somewhat minor scratches in the varnish throughout both sections. The rod weighs 5.60 oz. The action is a strong medium-fast. Includes what may or may not be the original bag and original tube with label 85% remaining.
