Paul Young 15 Ferrule Bamboo Rod 8'6"

VFT309

For sale here is a very special bamboo rod made in 1949 by Paul H. Young for his son, Paul A. Young Jr.

The rod is 8 1/2" in length and was made with a size 15/64 ferrule and 5/64 tip tops. The rod remains in excellent+ condition. All sections are full length, straight and without repair.

A letter of provenance will be included from Bob Summers.

The rod features moderately flamed tempered cane with jet back wraps. The script on each sections reads:

Butt Section:
8 1/2 - 15 Fer. D.F. 4.54 - HCH
Paul H. Young - Detroit - Maker

Tip Sections:
8 1/2' - 15 Fer. 5T.T. Tip wt. 1 1/16 oz.

The original Garrison-style grip measures 7 1/2" with moderate soiling and a bit of light ridging. Dual aluminum ring reel seat over a mortised cork spacer. The ferrule fit remains snug and smooth. The rod does indeed weigh 4.54 oz.

As Mr. Summers states in his provenance letter, "In view of the exceptional power & action of this rod plus the fact that he made it for his son, Paul A. Young Jr. had to have chosen very carefully the cane used, & did a lot of trial casting to obtain the tapers."

The original bag is included with "8 1/2 - 15 '49" written on the inside of the flap. Champion tube included.

There you have it....a Young family rod and a cannon that will throw an entire fly line!

The PHY serial number ledger started in year 1955. The below rods were some first rods appearing in the ledger. Only displayed here for comparison to the rod we are selling.

The 8" Para 15 entry weighed 4.05 oz. with a 15 ferrule and 4/64.

The 8 1/2 Para 16 entry weighed 4.87 oz. with a 16 ferrule and 5/64.

Interesting enough, we know of a very similar 8 1/2' rod made for Marion Lively in 1953 with also a 15 ferrule and a 5/64 tip top. Weight 4.75 oz.

Don't miss out added to this unique Young rod to your collection!
