For sale here is an EW Edwards built, Paul H. Young's "Ace" 8' 3/2 4-5wt. Made between 1925-1928. This rod is not only featured in Patrick Garner's book on E.W. Edwards but was part of his personal collection at the time of writing the book. You can find photographs and mention of it on pages 143 and 144.
The rod is in excellent condition and appears to be original with the exception of one tip being down 1/4". The bag and tube are also original. Caramel colored tempered cane with bronze pongee wraps and purple tipping. "Paul H. Young's Ace" is written on the blank in the typical Edwards yellow. Blued guides. Ring hook keeper, and a delicate bakelite winding check. The grip is unique for Edwards rods and almost definitely a request from Young, featuring a thumb indentation. This is an interesting early peak into the grip design that Young would later be so well known for. There is some slight ridging on the grip. Down-locking reel seat with a varnished Walnut spacer. Ferrule sizes 10/64 and 15/64. The fit is perfect. All of the components on the rod are Edwards' best trade-rod components as noted on page 144 in Garner's book on Edwards.
The rod weighs 4 3/4 oz. The action is crisp, on the faster side of medium fast, yet delicate if required. An excellent dry-fly rod.
