Paul Young Boat Rod 8' 2/2 #7

VFT1392

For sale here is a very scarce Paul H. Young "Boat Rod" -- eight feet with two sections and two tips. Serial #2265 made in May of 1957. This model was designed for fishing the AuSable River "hex" hatch from a boat. Less than 50 of this model were made by the Paul Young Rod Company, and of that number only approximately 25 were made by Paul himself. Some of these models were also called the "Encampment Special" for his clients who fished the Encampment River and North Platte River in Colorado/Wyoming.

The rod is in excellent original condition with a few exceptions. One tip appears to have splintered just below the tip-top and was repaired. The first guide down from the top was also re-wrapped in a slightly darker thread. There is no scarf evident, but the grain of the bamboo clearly was compromised from the splintering. There is no overwrap on this section of the rod. Also, a few of the guide wraps are dry and will require attention at some point. All sections are full length with slight, easily mendable sets in all three. The rod is totally fishable as is.

The rod features the handsome mottle-flamed cane Paul Young is so well known for with bronze-colored wraps and blued guides and ferrules. The script remains clean and bold written in Paul Young's hand. It reads:

"Boat Rod" 8' - 4 1/2 oz. H.C.H.          May '57

The previous owner's name is written on the flat above that one in a different cursive style handwriting, clearly added later by someone. Garrison-style hook keeper. E.C. Powell-style grip moderately soiled to a nice patina. There are some small dents and chips as well as very light ridging in places. Black aluminum down-locking reel seat over a mortised cork spacer. The butt cap features the "PAUL H. YOUNG CO. DETROIT - MICH." stamp. There is light wear to the rim of the butt cap. The Super-Z brand ferrules are size 15/64 with a great fit. The rod weighs 4 1/2 oz.

The rod has a very powerful parabolic action on the faster side of medium-fast. The rod can be felt flexing in the grip though I wouldn't call it overly parabolic. It loads well with a seven weight line.

Includes the original satin-like bag and original tube. There is a small hole in the bottom of the bag currently covered with a piece of tape.

This photo shows the prior owner back in the 1970's and one of many Atlantic Salmon landed with this rod. He liked it best with an eight weight line.

Don't miss out on this rarely seen model by one of the best rodmakers of all time.
