For sale here is a Paul H. Young bamboo rod. Nine feet with two sections and two tips for an eight weight line. Excellent restored condition. Bob Summers was able to save the original hardware and some of the original script as well as many of the original wraps. All sections are full length and straight.
This rod is likely an early version of the Bob Doerr model, but unmarked as such.
Dark mottle-flamed cane with bronze wraps. There are some superficial cracks in the varnish over many of the wraps. There is also light wear to the varnish. Bright guides. Garrison-style hook keeper. The script remains clean and bold and reads:
MJ. Towne Oct. 52 (in BOB SUMMERS' handwriting)
9' - 5.68 oz. GBF (in BOB SUMMERS' handwriting)
Fer. 17/64 Tip Top 6/64(in PAUL YOUNG'S handwriting)
Bamboo Wt. 4.08 oz. (in PAUL YOUNG'S handwriting)
The full wells grip measures 6 1/2" with moderate soiling. The cork was likely replaced during the restoration. Black aluminum down-locking reel seat over a mortised cork spacer with a 1 1/8" fighting butt made later by Summers. The butt cap features the PHY maker stamp. The blued step-down ferrules (not Super Zs) are size 17/64 with an excellent fit. The rod weighs 6.0 oz. The parabolic action is a very powerful medium-fast. Includes original bag and tube. Also comes with a canvas tube cover.
