For sale here is a Paul H. Young Rod Co. Martha Marie bamboo rod. Serial #4140. 7'6 2/2 5wt. The rod was made by Bob Summers in the early 1960s for Hazel Johnson, who tied flies for the Paul H. Young Rod Co. for ~ 30 years (and also performed the role of babysitter for Paul Jr. and Jack!) Hazel's son also told me that the great Ted Williams would come in the PHY Rod Co. shop and watch Hazel tie flies. This rod and two others (a Para 15 made in 1950 by Paul and a Prosperity model) come directly from the Johnson family. The rod is in excellent condition. Richly flamed cane. Down-locking black anodized aluminum reel seat and stamped butt cap in great condition. Oxidized hardware and Super-Z ferrules. Reverse half wells / Powell-style grip measures 6" and is in superb condition. Exquisite gold wraps and varnish work. As seen in the photos, the varnish has a couple of minor chips/scratches by the script on the butt section, but is in excellent condition on the rest of the rod. The original satin bag is in good condition, with some tape covering a small hole in the bottom of the bag. Original Champion-style tube in great shape also. The rod weighs 3 3/4 oz. Ferrules are 16/64 and fit together tightly. A very sought-after rod model from one of the best, complete with a provenance letter from the Johnson family.
