For sale here is a very special Paul H. Young Midge 6'3" 2/2 4-5wt bamboo rod with a marked weight of 1.71 oz. Serial no. 1971, making this the first serial-numbered Midge rod. Made in February 1955. The rod is in excellent original condition although the wraps on the butt section were given a light varnish touch-up. All sections are full length and straight.
The rod features darkly flame tempered cane and an oil finish. Jet black wraps and lightly oxidized guides. The script, Paul's handwriting, remains clean and bold.
First flat: Paul E. Jackson. Feb. '55 Second flat: "MIDGE" 6'3" - 1.71 oz. H.E.H. Third flat: Paul H. Young Co. Detroit - Maker.
The rod features a very petite 4" cigar grip with moderate soiling though it remains relatively smooth. Dual aluminum sliding ring reel seat over a mortised cork spacer. The "featherweight" black aluminum ferrules are size 12/64 with a good fit. Actual weight is 1.86 oz. The action is a powerful medium-fast and parabolic. Most Midge rods are best suited with a 5 line. This one throws a DT4 effortlessly as well. Includes original bag and tube.
