For sale here is a Paul H. Young Perfectionist bamboo fly rod. This rod comes from the Cardell family of Birmingham, Michigan. The Cardells were close friends with the Youngs and this rod was made as a family Christmas gift in 1954 for Jim Cardell, son of Paul Cardell. Bob Summers has mentioned that Paul Cardell was Paul Young's closest friend. Jim and his brother both received Perfectionist rods at the same time from Paul Young. I have included a photo here of Paul Young presenting Jim Cardell his Midge rod in 1954 at the Cardell's home.
The rod is in excellent plus and all-original condition. 7 1/2 feet with two sections and two tips. Casts a five weight line brilliantly. All sections are full length, straight and have never been repaired. The rod has a ventilated grip with two recessed thumb indentations and some very minor ridging in places. The oil finish is flawless, as are the silk wraps. Dual bright aluminum rings over all-cork reel seat. The two black aluminum male ferrules are a bit different in profile but are both original and as delivered in 1954. Same with the wrappings below the tip tops. The rod weighs 2.9 oz. and the ferrules are size 14/64. The rod comes with its original bag and tube. Both have Paul Young's writing on them.
Don't miss out on this unique, extremely historical, and all-original Paul Young Perfectionist rod. One of the greatest rods of all time!
