An EF Payne model 102 bamboo fly rod, 8’ 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 or #5 line. The rod weighs 3.9 ounces on my scale. Very moderate use with some grip soiling but no cracks at the ferrule wraps and the varnish is just barely worn off the guides. Fast action. Flamed and oven treated cane. The main wraps are brown with yellow edges on all and a small band of purple at the keeper and male ferrules. The perfection stripper and the bronze snake guides have a lot of dried varnish on them. The grip is 5 1/2” and turned to a medium cigar profile. The reel seat is flatted and varnished walnut. The oxidized cap and ring has the later Payne stamp and the oxidation on the bottom edge of the cap has been touched up with magic marker. Several factors suggest to me this may be a post-Jim Payne rod, including the heavier-than-typical varnish accumulation on the guides, the rod bag material which is different than the original, and the hang tag which is a later design. The tube seems to be the original style. Regardless of its likely post-Jim production, this feels like an excellent fishing rod and it is very hard to find them in excellent original condition like this. I'd certainly be delighted to fish it.
